My 3-Day Detox Experience

It all started with curiosity

Detox is defined as a process of removing toxins in your body. I got so interested with the juice detox because I have read about the great effects to those who tried it. The juice detox program means that for a certain number of days, no solid food will be taken, instead, the diet will be organic vegetables and fruits turned into juice. My friends who has done it said that after detox they feel lighter, more energetic, and more alert. Some friends even said that it made their skin more radiant and their hair more beautiful.

Pre-detox

If you are thinking of getting into the juice detox program, you have to be determined and committed on it. One has to remember that during detox,  you are not allowed CANE (caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, energy drinks). So you have to plan when to get into the program. Pick a date wherein there is not much socializing and eating required from you. I scheduled my detox  after a series of dinners with friends. Some I even have to schedule ahead of time and told them that I will be on detox. I told my whole family too. During the detox program, you will need all the support you can get and telling your friends and family will make them understand why on that particular time, you can not eat. I also considered my work when i set the date. I choose a week wherein there is not that much stress (such as month end since I am an accountant).

You have to prepare your body for this big adjustment. My pre-detox lasted for a week. If part of your daily diet are the “whites” (rice, bread and pasta), you will have to slowly ease out on those. Although I do not eat rice on regular days, my biggest preparation is weaning out on caffeine as well as chicken and sweets.  Only you can set your own pace and can determine how long you need to prepare. Two days before detox, I took only vegetables (salads or boiled veggies) and grilled or steamed fish, and lots of water of course.

Now, as for the number of actual detox days, it really depends on you. But for first timers, 3-5 days is recommended. Mine lasted for 3 days

Detox Time!

IMG_1134I bought my juice at Detoxify Bar (www.detoxifybar.com). You can choose your own mix but since it is my first time, i just followed their Ultimate Cleanse program. Check out my review on their products and services. Daily meal plan is a follows:

Breakfast: Green Vegan

Merienda: Lemon or Red Vegan or Minty Berry

Lunch: Green Vegan+Lemon Tea

Meriends: Lemon

Dinner: Green Vegan + Chamomile Tea

In between juices, I drink lots and lots of water with lemon.

The first day is the adjustment phase for me. I guess because of the lack of caffeine, I initially felt sluggish in the morning.  However when I took my lemon tea during lunch after my Green Vegan lunch, I felt a lot better. Because of all the liquids that I have to drink, i felt so full. I just forced myself to drink the chamomile tea at night because i am not used to drinking a lot before I sleep.

2nd and 3rd day, feels like just a normal days for me. I think because my body already adjusted to the juice. In fact I already felt the effects of the juices because I feel light, more focused and more energized. I was also not sleepy anymore. I was able to do my daily tasks at work more effieciently.

Overall it was a good 3 days for me. I used to think I will experience bouts of hunger but I did not. I felt full without the bloated feeling (evidenced by a flat tummy!).

Post detox

Since I prepared my body for detox, I will also have to prepare my body to go back to my regular meal routine. So for two days, I will be into vegetables and fish again. Then will introduce tea again in 3 days before I take my coffe again.

A couple of days after detox I noticed that my skin is fairer and smoother. I feel light and even though I already went back to my regular diet, I noticed that I no longer feel bloated. Speaking of bloated-ness, my tummy flattened and my bulges disappeared. Also, because detox requires drinking a lot of water, it also became my habit even after I am done with detox. My energy level is up as well and I no longer feel sleepy or tired especially in the afternoons. I do not anymore need the artificial boost of coffee to perk me up.

You want to try? Here’s my tip

I know most of you will ask about the weight loss. Yes, I did lose quite some weight in 3 days. Although I will not tell you how many pounds because I do not want you to take it as a benchmark. Remember that our body reacts differently. If you want to lose weight, remember that detox is just a jumpstart. It will be so easy to gain the wight back as soon as you resume your usual diet. Detox will help, but only up to the extent that you are in it. As much as you commit yourself to getting into the detox, you will also have to commit yourself to the the change in lifestlye  after. Watching what you eat and getting as much exercise as you can will help you maintain what you achieved from your detox.  Also, please try not to cheat! Since detox is expensive do your best to stay committed to not eating solids, that way, you will maximize the benefits.

So good luck on your detox program if you intend to try! Just prepare and have fun!

BOOK REVIEW: Desperate: Hope for the Mom who needs to Breathe

Motherhood is such a big responsibility, a calling. The journey is rewarding but also challenging. It requires a lot of love, patience, time and strength . Yes, strength not just in physical aspect but more importantly emotionally and spiritually. At some point a mom will get overwhelmed by all the responsibilities and expectations. If not guided, an overwhelmed mother will result to an angry and unhappy one which will also affect her home.
Desperate: Hope for the Mom who needs to Breathe is a book written by two friends who experienced their own challenges  as moms. The book mostly discuss the issues of a stay at home mom but a working mom like me can still very much relate. The frustrations, fears and disappointments of moms are common, whether stay at home or working. The authors, Sarah Mae and Sally shares their own struggles and how they were able to cope with it. Each chapter begins with Sarah Mae writing to Sally and sharing her parenting struggles. Sarah Mae is very relatable. She writes her experiences and makes me feel like we are going thru the same struggles. Sally, on the other hand, is  a mentor every mom wishes to have. Shes is caring, inspiring and uplifting. Her words of wisdom came from years of experience taking care of her now adult children. Her experiences led her to the Lord’s path. She is a true testatement that if one totally lifts their lives and their family to God, things will fall into place.
The book talks about the challenges of moms such as dealing with housework, disappointments in disciplining children, handling stress and depression, all in the Christian way. I would not call myself a very religious person but I was able to relate and it even helped me deal with my personal issues as a mom. A personal favorite part of the book is the YOUR TURN portion. It gives a deeper reflection of what was discussed and gives mothers the chance to reflect on their own situations.
Personally, this book has an impact on me. The book came to my life when I’m at my lowest as a mom when my second born baby is very sick. Reading the book, I was able to relate to the feeling of being tired most of the time, being angry, confused, and doubting myself. The book made me realize several things: (1) that I am like just most moms who are expecting myself to be perfect (2) that moms need to find time for themselves and should not feel guilty about it  (3) having a family that is centered in the Lord is the most effective parenting formula.  The book allowed me to personally reflect on myself and analyze myself as a mom. Thru it, I was able to accept certain realities of my life. I was able to identify the cause of my frustrations and even anger.  The realization and acceptance led to a change in my outlook in life, in my faith.
This book I believe should be in every mom’s shelf, especially, moms of young children. When things get too much to handle, one can open this book and feel that she has found friends in Sarah Mae and Sally.
Below are some of my favorite lines from the book
  • A happy mom who is secure in herself and at ease in her life is a rare gift that children love and appreciate.
  • Determine for yourself what you hope to be the outcome of your family. What legacies do you want to leave for your children?
  • I want to be a safe place for my children. I want them to see that my arms are open and I love them no matter what they do.
  • We cannot be successful as moms alone, no matter how hard we try. But God with us is more than enough to build a wonderful legacy and influence.
  • When all else seems hopeless, and yet I still turn to hope, it brings great honor to God and renders Satan utterly powerless.
  • Happy mom is a real gift to her children. When we quiet our souls before Him and close off those outside sounds, we can once again hear His words, and be led by Him in goodness and truth.
  • What a mother is called to be: a warrior who will not give up or cease to keep fighting the battle for her children’s souls.

My Toddler Diaper Bag Must-Haves

Weekends means the most awaited family time. It is two days of hitting the mall, leisure parks and going to church. Whenever we go out,
my toddler’s bag has the following standard contents:
Extra pair of clothes – a t-shirt, shorts, underwear and socks. I only bring cotton ones so it won’t get too bulky inside the bag
A pair of Sweaters – just in case it gets too cold inside the mall
Cloth diaper – Truly a mom’s best friend! An all around helper! It can be used to wipe sweat, spills, drool, to dry wet hands
Water bottle – I’m very particular with the water that Heinel drinks so I make sure that he brings his own. I place it in a small bag so in case it spills, it won’t wet the entire contents of the bag
Wet towel/Wet Ones – to wipe dirty hands and for “emergency” trips to the bathroom
Hand sanitizer
Light snacks such as biscuits/crackers – you’ll never know if you will get stuck in traffic or the food that you ordered takes time to be served
Toy – since my son loves die-cast cars, I make sure to bring 2 or 3 small cars to keep him entertained insde the car or while waiting in restaurants
Insect repellant lotion
Extra reusable bag – to store wet or used clothes
Fan – for hot days inside the church
It may seem a lot but I am able to fit all these in a medium sized trendy bag. How about you fellow mom? What’s inside your kid’s bag? Feel free to add to the list!

Footwear for Moms on the Go

When one has kids, you are always on your toes. Motherhood changed a lot of my fashion preferences, most particularly with footwear. Gone are the days when I can wear platforms or stilettos or high heels at the mall. But hey, alternative footwear can be fashionable too. Here are my favorite mommy-friendly footwear:
Ballet flats
I’m a girl at heart so ballet flats are my most favorite footwear. It can be matched with almost anything; shorts, pants, skirts and dresses. I can’t seem to get enough of ballet flats. My favorite types are those laces, flowers and jewels. It adds personality to the shoes!
Low wedge
I still wear wedges but I just make sure that the heels are low. I usually wear it with my maxi dresses and shorts.
Flip flopsFlip flops are my ultimate “go to” footwear. It is comfortable and can be worn with shorts or denim skirts. With several designs in the market, you will definitely find one that will suit your personality. Just a tip, please make sure that flip flops are regularly washed and scrubbed especially if you will wear it to the mall. I find it a turnoff seeing dirty slippers. I mean, come on we still need to look presentable, right?
Sneakers
I’m not a rubber shoes girl so the next best sports footwear for me is a pair of sneakers. It’s a perfect footwear for days out in the playground or playdates with other kids. My favorite brands are Keds, Tretorn and Converse.

SandalsFor days that requires me to dress up a little like parties or school events, low heeled sandals are a must. I just make sure that I choose sandals that have sturdy straps to ensure secure fit. We wouldn’t want those straps to snap while I’m chasing my son, right?Your footwear brings out your personality. Nowadays we are lucky to have so much choices in the market that we can both have comfort and fashion combined.

A Happy Wife makes a Happy Life

Yesterday I was watching a local TV show “KrisTV”. The episode features Kim Atienza; a news anchor, host, animal enthusiast. His home is truly a busy one with 3 kids, 34 dogs, 16 crocodiles, various types of tortoise and frogs, 2 macaw birds, and some indoor pets such as hedgehogs. His wife owns a Chinese school where their kids go to school as well. When Kris asked how his wife was able to manage a home as busy as theirs and a career which is equally demanding, he said that it is because he believes in the motto “A happy wife makes a happy life”. He supports her career and encourages her to pamper herself and do the things that she loves. They have dinners together, surprises her with gifts, and do affectionate things such as texting her “I love you” several times a day.
“A happy wife makes a happy life”. This I truly agree with. As a woman, we play several roles and most of the time we end up sacrificing a lot just to make sure that everyone around us is happy. But the danger in that is when we end up losing ourselves. If one always allows herself to be the last priority, one way or another she will realize that she no longer knows who she is and what she wants, and thus end up being miserable. If a woman is happy with herself, then she can shower so much love to her family. Each woman must find her source of inner happiness. Some find it by having a career of their own; others find it by staying at home. No matter what it is, it has to be her choice. A woman must not lose herself because she has a husband and kids to take care of. She must also give herself time to go out with her friends and her husband or even alone for some pampering time at the salon and spa and go shopping.
During my pregnancy with my first born son, I have to resign from work on my 5th month because of my complicated pregnancy. When I gave birth, despite the presence of my son, I still felt a twinge of sadness. The thought of work keeps coming back. I tried to set it aside and focus on my son but it came to a point when I just couldn’t ignore it anymore. I was blessed to have a wonderful husband who supported my decision. When I started working again, I went back to being my old happy self. I realized that having a career makes me happy; having personal achievements makes me happy. And that inner happiness benefited my family because I became a better wife and mother.
I hope this reaches all the wives and mothers out there. Do not feel guilty in thinking about yourselves at times. Marriage and motherhood should not change who you are, but rather, make you a better person than you were before. And to husbands, do not forget to show some love and appreciation to your wives. Remember, a happy wife makes a happy life!
