For the first time since the lockdown in March, Hendrix was able to go elsewhere aside from a quick stroll in our village. Sadly it is not to go to any park or mall, but to his dentist’ clinic. As thrilled as he was to finally ride the car, he was not entirely happy with these protective gears that he has to wear. But being such a trooper, Hendrix obliged when we explained that it is for his protection especially that his dentist ‘ clinic is in a big hospital. We even showed him that even Mom and Dad have to wear it too.
Going to a hospital in the midst of a pandemic is really unsettling. We tried putting it off for as long as we can by having tele-consultations but in the end both his doctor and us agreed that it is best that an examination in the clinic be done. The thing about kids with seizure history, a toothache more so an infection caused by it, can lead to more serious health concerns. It has been worrying me for quite a number of days already that he will have a fever or any discomfort caused by the damaged tooth. We just could not take the risk at this point.
For the protection of everyone, strict protocols in the hospital were implemented. Various forms need to be filled up, online interviews conducted just to ensure the need to have a face to face consultation. Medical appointments must be pre-scheduled. The guards are very strict and would not let anyone in the building unless the clinic confirms the appointment. No face mask, no entry is a serious policy. What used to be a busy hallway filled with patients waiting for their turn to be attended is now empty and dark. Definitely different.
Through it all, Hendrix has been so happy and delighted to just be out of the house again. Hearing his laughter while inside the car just made everything better. He might have shed some tears during a dental procedure but he came out of the clinic with a big smile on his face that lasted until we got home. Just being out again, with the sun streaming on his face is enough to fill his heart with joy despite the discomforts.
Children has a way of seeing the positives in what seems to be a scary and uncomfortable situation.
