Road to Self-Feeding

For the past weeks, Hendrix has been practicing how to eat by himself. It is still a work in progress but this little boy is eager to learn!
For years, we had been attempting to teach him how to eat by using his hands but somehow he does not seem ready nor interested. There were instances when we were discouraged; that self-feeding might be something unattainable considering the level of his Cerebral Palsy but it did not discourage us.

One just like in anything, one day he just did show some interest! This prompted us to work on his hands and the rest just smoothly followed. Now, he does not want anyone to hold his spoon anymore! He is happy eating by himself.
I am so proud to see how his hardwork is paying off. There are times he gets frustrated because the movements that he has in his mind is not what his body is doing but it never stopped him from trying again and again.
I am thankful to his teachers for guiding us and believing in him and the things that he can do. There was a “never” answer in our skills checklist, only “in God’s perfect time.”
Self-feeding took us 8 years to learn, but you know what, that is what made it even sweeter to achieve.
