Wedding Planning (with your Mom)

You have to admit, next to the bride, a wedding is also the mothers’ event. it is an emotional time for them as they hand over their daughters, to their respective partners for a lifelong commitment.  Often times Moms get really excited with the preparation and will definitely make suggestions and contributions to your wedding; from the guest list to the theme. As much as you want to consider all their ideas, the event is your wedding day, and you and your fiance’s ideas must win over. This sometimes create conflict between the couple and the mother of the bride.

To maintain that harmonious relationship with your mother while planning your dream wedding, here are some tips:

1. Let her know your vision of your dream wedding. This will somehow set the parameters of the preparation process because she will realize that some ideas might not fit into the plan.

2. Listen to her suggestions. And let her know that you are taking her points to consideration. But do not give her high hopes on taking in all of her ideas. Be honest with her on what might work and those that will not, let her know why it will not fit into your plans or theme rather than saying “no” outright.

3. Give her a task. Most of the time mothers just want to feel needed. Assign her some “to do’s” like choosing the flowers or finding the perfect souvenir.  Having her preoccupied will make her feel that she is a part of this major event in your life.

4. Keep her updated with the preparations. Let her know what you have achieved so far in booking your suppliers. Let her know the challenges in choosing just one supplier each. Share with her even the not so good stuff.

5. Set “dates” with your mom. As you get busy with all the wedding preparations, do not forget to spend time with her. It takes the stress off to just hang out and do girl stuff like shopping, trip to the spa or movie nights.

At the end of the day, your mother just wants to feel that she has contributed something to this major event in your life. Be appreciative of her efforts and ideas. As a final way of saying “thank you” to her, next to you, make her a standout at your wedding by helping her choose the right gown. Help her find one that will best suite her personality, body type and will make her feel the most beautiful.
